Resident injured, dogs die in house fire in Jefferson

A resident was injured and two dogs perished in a house fire in Jefferson Friday night.

According to Jefferson police department captain Mark Clouse, the Jefferson fire department, the JPD and Greene County EMS responded to a structure fire at 602 S. Oak St. The Grand Junction fire department was asked to assist soon after.

The 54-year-old resident, whom neighbors identified as Kathleen Specht, suffered burns to her hands. She was transported to Greene County Medical Center by Greene County EMS and later transferred to the University of Iowa Medical Center in Iowa City. Her two dogs did not survive the fire.

The residence was a total loss. Jefferson fire chief Randy Love reported that the fire appears to have started in the kitchen of the residence. An investigation into the exact cause of the fire is ongoing.

The house is owned by Phillip Sloan. According to county assessor’s records, the 495-square-foot house was built in 1925 and is valued at $9,700. Including the lot, the property value is $17,600.
